TIP into PEDS

Modeled after the highly successful and decade-long TIP program in MSU College of Human Medicine Department of Family Medicine, the TIP into PEDS: An Integrated MD-MPH-PEDS Program is a transitional fourth year medical school experience, with public health integration, that continues into pediatric residency. TIP into PEDS is based at the MSU Flint Campus in partnership with the Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Residency Program and the Michigan State University and Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative. Leveraging the public health infrastructure in Flint, with the home of the MSU the college's Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health and fully-accredited Master in Public Health program, TIP into PEDS will feature a fourth year of medical school that integrates public health education (MPH), child health policy and advocacy, mentored pediatric public health research, and pediatric residency.

The TIP into PEDS Program is for medical students at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine who:

  • Are currently in their third year of medical school and are interested in a career in pediatrics.
  • Have an interest in obtaining a Master in Public Health.
  • Have a strong interest in completing residency training at the Colleg of Human Medicine-affiliated Pediatric Residency Program at Hurley Children’s Hospital in Flint.
  • Are looking for an experience that will ease the transition into residency and will allow them to participate in residency experiences as fourth-year students.
  • Would benefit from a MPH tuition scholarship (value of >$30,000).

TIP is not an early decision residency program and does not guarantee the student a residency position. Rather, TIP helps support the student’s interest in pediatrics and public health and integration into a pediatrics residency program. Successful participation in TIP should make the student an excellent candidate for residency training in pediatrics. If the student progresses well in TIP, he or she can anticipate that the residency program will rank the student highly and training at that program will be an option.
